Xavier Servas

Bio

French designer and visual artist Xavier Servas moved to Brussels in 2021, where he works with the Au Charbon collective. A graduate of the Arts Décoratifs de Paris in 2011, his work explores two main areas: materials and inflatable structures. Driven by an experimental approach, in 2020 he initiated research into natural baudruche, which he produces himself and uses to create inflatable sculptures.

Objects

Pumpkin

Pumpkin is an inflatable light sculpture. It unfolds when switched on: a small fan activates and inflates it, showing a sequence reminiscent of the blossoming and ripening of a flower to its fruity state. The material is a leather made by tanning pig intestines. Extremely thin and impermeable to air, its technical properties are similar to those of certain synthetic membranes. In the past, this type of leather was used by the Inuit to make kayak clothing.
