15 years for Belgium is Design

Belgium is Design celebrates its 15th anniversary, marking a milestone in the collective effort to showcase Belgian creativity on the global stage.

Although the first Belgian-led initiatives appeared at Milan Design Week as early as 2006, Belgium is Design officially took shape in 2011, when Belgian regional design organisations  — Flanders District of Creativity, MAD Brussels, and Wallonie-Bruxelles Design Mode - chose to unite under a single, more powerful identity to amplify their international visibility. Since then, Belgium is Design has been driven by a shared ambition: to promote Belgian design worldwide.

This unified statement continues to embody the strength and diversity of the Belgian design ecosystem. Through participation in leading international events such as Milan Design Week and Maison&Objet, as well as the organisation of targeted B2B meetings, Belgium is Design has consistently fostered connections between Belgian designers and global industry professionals.

MILAN DESIGN WEEK, a long-standing commitment

Over the last fifteen years, Milan has served as a key platform for Belgian design. Belgium is Design has curated ten exhibitions, as well as a film, The Object Becomes, during Fuorisalone, highlighting more than 200 designers and companies in prestigious venues.

Until 2023, Belgium is Design has also supported the next generation through annual participations in SaloneSatellite, enabling over 80 young designers to present their work at this internationally recognized springboard for emerging talent. As the design scene evolves, the Belgium is Design now concentrates its presence in the Fuorisalone and continues to strengthen its commitment to future-oriented creation.

The Belgian Design Map further reinforces this visibility by gathering and promoting all Belgian initiatives present in Milan, from installations to new product launches.

MAISON&OBJET PARIS and beyond

At Maison&Objet in Paris, Belgium is Design provides a platform for both established names and emerging designers, offering them a strategic opportunity to develop business opportunities on an international level. The Belgian selection stands out for its rich diversity — materials, techniques, approaches — and for a shared commitment to more sustainable design practices.

A focus on textile

Textile creation has always held a meaningful place in Belgium’s design landscape. A new generation of textile designers is now reshaping this heritage with innovation and advanced technologies. Since 2019, three exhibitions have been dedicated exclusively to textile design, demonstrating the sector’s renewed vitality and showcased at New York Textile Month, the Milan Design Week as well as in Belgium at CID Grand Hornu.

New horizons

Belgium is Design also continues to expand its presence at major cultural events. Recent additions include Révélations – International Fine Craft & Creation Biennial at the Grand Palais in Paris, which shines a spotlight on conceptual, technical and craft-driven design.

In 2026, the project takes plate the first time at Copenhagen’s 3 Days of Design, exploring new markets before returning to Milan in 2027.

Over the years, Belgian design has gained strong recognition on the international scene. Belgium is Design has become synonymous with distinctive quality, ingenuity and expertise. All partners firmly believe in the crucial role designers can play in addressing societal, economic and environmental challenges. In a context that demands fresh perspectives and systemic rethinking, designers’ ability to analyse, reimagine and reshape existing infrastructures is more essential than ever. This is the very essence of their profession — and the spirit Belgium is Design continues to champion.

MILAN DESIGN WEEK

10 Exhibitions in the Fuorisalone in prestigious venues such as Accademia di Brera, Triennale, Palazzo Litta, Alcova and Baranzate Ateliers.

11 participations at SaloneSatellite with 80+ emerging designers who benefited from this springboard in their professionnal career.

‘In addition to the obvious media visibility, which helps to promote all of the individuals involved in Belgian design, this unmissable event is key to forging lasting links within the industry. We also see it as an opportunity to highlight the ability of design and designers to foster significant change in the field of industrial production and its added value for other sectors’ Giorgia Morero (WBDM)

One story, nine practices: the stories blend together to create a unity of space and time, building a single voice common to all. The object (the design), assumed here as a starting point, has a variable, vulnerable identity and becomes a pretext for determining the locations in which the narrative is integrated. An agile artifact generated by individual and collective experience, it passes from one hand to another, it adapts, it is shared, it regenerates.
