ECO Solidarity at Wanted Design Manhattan

Reexamining the roles of designers and architects, ECO Solidarity (New York, May 21-23) looks for more ways to offer vital skills and deliver practical support for individuals and communities affected by environmental disasters, war, and violence.

Studio Plastique, Brussels based studio, is taking part in the event with the Common Sands project. Their work combines imaginative scenarios and critical reflections with in-depth investigations of complex material supply chains and technological infrastructures, thus pushing the boundaries of what design aims to achieve.

ECO Solidarity brings together a group of 9 eco-focused design studios with the aim to share their work and expertise at ICFF + WantedDesign Manhattan (New York, 21-23.05.2023). Each studio is supported by cultural institutions members of the EUNIC New York network. Next to the group presence at the event, a series of dialogue give designers a voice.

The 2023 program is organized around two themes.

The first focuses on prevention and research, new sustainable materials and methods of implementation that improve durability, circularity, recycling waste, carbon-neutral and low-emission productions, with the goal of improving human and environmental habitats.

The second focuses on ethical issues that surround design and architecture, reconstruction, recuperation, and healing in response to environmental and humanitarian crises resulting from military conflicts. The emphasis is placed on repositioning architects and designers to address critical issues through community engaged design process via interactive initiatives, city walks and site-specific interventions.

Wallonie-Bruxelles Design Mode, founding member of Belgium is Design, supports the participation of Studio Plastique. Founded by Theresa Bastek and Archibald Godts, the studio combines imaginative scenarios and critical reflections with in-depth investigations of complex material supply chains and technological infrastructures, thus pushing the boundaries of what design aims to achieve.

Their project Common Sands is an ongoing exploration of the extraction, transformation, application and end-of-life of sand and sand-based products. The project forms the basis for a number of multidisciplinary collaborations – offering alternative visions of value and responsibility through design.
